Staffordshire Shire Horse Association Hold First Major Event

heavy horses on show in staffordshire

Poor weather did not dampen the spirits of the members of the newly formed Staffordshire Shire Horse Association as they held their first major public event - a "Meet and Greet the Shires". With 11 horses on show at Trentham Gardens, Stoke-on-Trent, members of the public had the opportunity to watch a series of displays, try platting a horses mane, and take part in competitions to guess the age and weight of some of the horses. Of course the opportunity to meet the horses would not be complete without going for a ride, which was especially popular with the children.

Shire Horse Accident at Portsmouth Show
shire horse accident at Portsmouth ShowThree people were taken to hospital with broken bones and shock following an incident at this year's City of Portsmouth Heavy Horse Event. The event, which has been held at Southsea for 23 years always attracts large crowds, but in all that time has had a spotless safety record.

Unfortunately this year proved the exception. During the prize giving parade a shire horse broke away from it's handler and careered through a safety barrier and scattering the crowd of spectators at the side of the ring.

Waldburg Shires Pull Lord Mayors Coach
Waldburg Shire Heavy Horses Pull Lord Mayors CoachThe icon of London's Lord Mayor’s Show, the gold State Coach, was under new management this year as the role of pulling the 250-year-old coach through the streets of the City of London had been handed over to a team of six horses from Waldburg Shires.

Brewers’ horses have traditionally been used to pull the State Coach to the Royal Courts of Justice in the City of Westminster, but this year, for the first time in more than a generation, responsibility fell to this new team.

Hampshire Fire Service Rescue Suffolk Punch
Hampshire firefighters rescue Suffolk Punch heavy horseHampshire firefighters recently responded to an unusual animal rescue, which involved a Suffolk Punch that had fallen into a small stream on a farm at Curdridge just outside Southampton.

At 18.2 hands tall and weighing approximately 1.3 tonnes, the Suffolk Punch named Senator had become trapped by his own weight whilst laid on his side in the ditch. Specialist lifting techniques were employed to bring the heavy horse onto the bank and away from the ditch, using the farmer's tractor with a fore-end loader.

 Shire Horses Harvest Unusual Crop

Working Shire horses harvested a very unusual crop at the Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, West Sussex this summer - rye, grown specifically for harness makers to use in the manufacture of heavy horse collars.

Today very little exceptionally tall rye is grown, but there is still a niche market for it for heavy horse collars. These are in demand for heavy draught horses and light driving horses, and specialist harness makers still produce them.

Suffolk Punch Heavy HorsesThe fight to safeguard the future of the Suffolk horse has received a boost from none other than Her Majesty the Queen.

In 2003 the Suffolk Horse Society presented the Queen with a filly foal - Whitton Poppy - bred by Tom Walne from Ipswich.

Earlier this year Poppy gave birth to a foal of her own, which has been named Sandringham Sailor II after a Suffolk horse once owned by the Queen's father, King George VI.
